This has been an exceedingly simple introduction to the Avatamsaka Sutra. It is full of omissions and imperfections. The Great Means Expansive Buddha Flower Adornment Sutra is immeasurably profound, ineffably boundless, and supremely wonderful. Hence, I feel ashamed that the words which flow from the author’s pen are not extensive.

The Great Master Hsuan Tsang praised the Avatamsaka Sutra saying,
‘The Avatamsaka Sutra is such that a single door can open limitless doors, in multi-layered inexhaustibility. This Dharma is inconceivable, whereas the Great Prajna Sutra is just a single door within the Flower Adornment Sutra.’

The Great Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua explained,
“Where can you find your original treasures? In the Flower Adornment Sutra. The Avatamsaka Sutra is filled with the treasures of the universe. The Unsurpassed, Proper and Equal Right Enlightenment is also to be found therein. By merely reciting, ‘Homage to the Avatamsaka Assembly of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as vast as the sea,’ you accrue infinite merit and virtue. Your storehouses will be filled with boundless treasures..
“In any period in which the Flower Adornment (Avatamsaka) Sutra exists is a period in which the Proper Dharma will dwell long…”

You can draw near to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas by reading, listening to, investigating, writing out, memorizing, reciting, and upholding the Avatamsaka Sutra. A few verses from the final chapter of the Flower Adornment (Avatamsaka) Sutra says,

For all the evil deeds I have done in the past
Created by my body, mouth, and mind,
From beginningless greed, anger and delusion:
I now know shame and repent of them all.
I vow that my body, mouth, and mind will be forever pure
And that all practices and Buddhalands will be also.
I vow in every way to be identical
To the wisdom of Universal Worthy.
I vow that when my life approaches its end,
All obstructions will be swept away;
I will see Amitabha Buddha,
And be born in his Land of Ultimate Bliss and Peace.
When reborn in the Western Land,
I will perfect and completely fulfill
Without exception these Great Vows,
To delight and benefit all beings.
Realms of worlds and empty space might reach an end,
And beings’ karma and afflictions be extinguished;
But they will never be exhausted
Neither will any of my vows.
The supreme and endless blessings from Samantabhadra’s Conduct
I now universally transfer.
May every living being, drowning and adrift,
Soon return to the Land of Limitless Light!
