Annotation
Why is Manjushri Bodhisattva inquiring about the Dharma if he is foremost in wisdom? He is doing it out of Great Compassion. He is asking on behalf of all those assembled there who do not understand and who do not have the required wisdom to know how to ask such profound questions in the appropriate way. When a Great Bodhisattva acts or speaks, he is doing it to benefit the Sages and all living beings. He is doing it because of his compassionate vows to edify, save, and universally benefit all living beings.
When an ordinary person asks questions, he/she is asking out of ignorance, doubts, or a thirst for knowledge. He/she is asking because he/she does not know. Whereas a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is asking on behalf of others, since he already knows and wishes all living beings to know as well.
Manjushri Bodhisattva is also teaching the other Bodhisattvas how to ask questions in the right way and to humbly seek knowledge from those who know.
